VPLS is based on MPLS-core infrastructure in background and is using mac-bridging/learning in data plane.

It's basically a broadcast domain over MPLS.


 control-plane MAC learning,

tight L2-L3 coupling (e.g. "ARP" signaling),

active-active multihoming,

mechanisms to avoid traffic tromboning (virtual gateways),

L2 loop detection (e.g. MAC move signaling),

etc...
