Traditional BLE / iBeacon / Eddystone ( all use the same Hardware )
iBeacon:
- Controlled by Apple
- Closed format
- Beacons broadcast IDs (numerical values)
Eddystone:
- Endorsed by Google, Samsung, Opera, Mozilla, etc…
- Open source format
- Broadcasts several types of data: IDs, URLs, encrypted IDs, various telemetry data from sensors on the beacons.
The URL frame opens up the possibility to have proximity-based content and interaction without an app. That is the single biggest thing in beacons right now!
All you need is a beacon and a website!
- Bluetooth is a standard for the short-range wireless interconnection of mobile phones, computers, and other electronic devices.
- iBeacon technology is a beacon protocol that has been built into Apple’s iOS 7 and later versions of mobile operating system that allows iPhones and iPads to constantly scan for Bluetooth devices nearby. Beacons use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) which is a part of Bluetooth 4.0 specification. It is Android and iOS compatible, but native only for iOS.
- Google’s Eddystone, is a beacon protocol for open-source beacons which could be manufactured by any business at an affordable cost
